Mystery Lameness and Muscle Myopathies

Your latest Humble Hoof podcast can help you solve a mystery! Progressive Hoof Care Practitioner certified trimmer, Alicia Harlov describes her latest Humble Hoof episode here:

The Humble Hoof Podcast - Mystery Lameness & Myopathies

“Sometimes there are mystery lameness cases we just can’t figure out. Your horse may be stiff some days and fine others, or they might really react to things like weather, exercise, vaccines, and more. It can feel like trying to hit a moving target when figuring out how to rehab them.

I’ve had a few of these cases where things weren’t going as planned, and finally they were diagnosed with muscle issues- things like PSSM, PSSM2, MFM, MIM and its variants. Once managed, I saw these cases thrive.

So I decided to reach out to Marion Otto, an equine nutrition consultant who has a lot of extensive experience with muscle myopathy cases. She and I talk about the various variants, the diagnostics used, and some management tips to increase soundness.”

Greg's Personal Gift to a Dynamic Trail Riding Duo

Emma Melton and her horse Woody in Cavallo Purple Trek Hoof Boots

When Cavallo CEO Greg Giles met 13-year-old Emma Melton at Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio, he was moved by Emma’s bond with her horse Woody and her dream of becoming a professional barrel racer.

Emma, who is deaf, spends her days riding Woody through trails, woods, and pastures. The pair has grown tremendously together over the past year. Wanting to support their journey, Greg gifted them a set of Cavallos to help Woody stay comfortable and healthy on all their adventures.

Emma’s Dad, Joshua, reached out to say the Purple Trek Boots fit perfectly, that Woody is doing really well with them and that Emma “loves them”. Cavallo is proud to support young riders like Emma and grateful to be part of Emma and Woody’s story.

Celebrating Connection Across Continents

Carole Herder & Greg from Cavallo Hoof Boots at Spoga Horse show, Germany

Greg and I are always thrilled to host members of our incredible Cavallo Community. It’s not just business—it’s a shared mission, built on trust, respect, and genuine connection. This gathering brought together some of our most valued worldwide distributors—people we know, like, and trust. We may be scattered across the globe, but moments like these remind us that we’re truly aligned in purpose.

Because let’s be honest—if you can’t enjoy a dinner together, laugh over stories, and toast to future goals, why work together at all?

We’re grateful for the friendships that have grown alongside our professional relationships. These connections are the heart of Cavallo’s success. Thank you to everyone who joined us. You make this journey meaningful—and fun!

Canadian Cowboys Crushin' It!

Cavallo Hoof Boots - Carole Herder with Alberta Cowboys at Horse Expo Red Deer

Still smiling from an unforgettable time at Horse Expo Canada in Red Deer, Alberta!

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting the incredibly talented Shaun Johnston (yes—Jack from Heartland!) and Greg Cox. What a duo! Their music show was pure magic, and when they sang Wagon Wheel—one of my all-time FAVOURITE songs.

Such genuine, down-to-earth guys with serious talent and big hearts. Grateful for the laughs, the music, and the memories. Until next time, fellas! 🤠

Ryley’s Story: Living with Moon Blindness

Ryley was the first horse I’ve adopted from a rescue, mainly to be a companion for my retired champion mare, Dot, also known by her show name ‘AsBadAsMyDad’. Her sire, appropriately, was ‘NoMoreMisterNiceGuy’. When I brought Ryley home, I was told he had intermittent moon blindness, but that he seemed okay and was likely rideable. That didn’t matter much to me—he had a home here regardless.

What I’ve since learned, however, is that moon blindness is not something to take lightly. While Ryley is adorable and has a fundamentally kind nature, his vision problems make him anxious and unpredictable. He spooks easily and doesn’t always know what’s coming at him, which affects how he interacts with the world around him.

Ryley is a pasture horse, through and through. He’s not the kind of horse you’d want to take for a ride through the woods—his vision is just too unreliable. And as much as I would love to see him under saddle, his well-being and sense of safety come first.

What Is Moon Blindness? 🌙

Moon blindness—technically called Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU)—is the most common cause of blindness in horses. It involves repeated, painful inflammation of the uveal tract within the eye and can eventually lead to permanent damage or complete vision loss.

While any horse can develop ERU, Appaloosas are particularly at risk. In fact, research has shown that Appaloosas are up to eight times more likely to develop moon blindness than other breeds, due to genetic factors associated with their coat patterns and pigmentation.

Symptoms can come and go, and there is no known cure.

A Gentle Reminder ❤

Horses like Ryley remind us that not all disabilities are visible at first glance. His journey has taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of really listening to our horses—especially when they can’t see the world the way we do.

Mini Star Shines BIG on Stage!

Sure, the ballerinas for the Alberta Ballet Don Quixote performances trained their whole lives, but guess who all eyes were on?

Jasmine - mini horse Alberta Ballet on stage pink in Cavallo Hoof Boots CLB

“Jasmine received a standing ovation for every show so far! We’ve done four in Calgary and have two yet to go in Edmonton.

Everyone compliments Jasmine on her “ballet slippers”, and I’m grateful for them too! The concrete backstage is quite smooth, but I don’t have any worries about her slipping in her CLB Boots.

The days of rehearsals and performances were long. There are times when Jasmine stands backstage between her entrances and needs to wait for 30 minutes. I don’t need to worry about fatigue because of the protection from the soles of the CLBs.

Thank you for making this product. It’s served her (and Phillippe, her mini donkey counterpart) very well previously for site visits to residents in care homes, and continues to take care of any of my concerns in further venues: radio stations, hotel lobbies, auditorium stages… Who knows what our next adventure will be! But be assured, it will be with Cavallo CLBs.”

What YOU'RE Saying!

Cavallo Hoof Boots in Arizona desert- Courtney Anderson

“Just wanted to tell you how very much I am in love with the Cavallo Treks! I purchased a pair for my gelding, Blue, for an upcoming trip to Bryce Canyon National Park and our ride into Peek-A-Boo.

From the start, the customer service was exceptional. I would’ve ordered the wrong size, but your team helped me size his fronts and even from my terrible photos (I’m an amputee, so the tape measure and taking photos thing was a challenge, and my photos were not the best), they were a perfect fit when I received them. I spent the next week oiling them and breaking them in, but was nervous about the first trail ride.

The leather at that point was butter-soft, and Blue never took one misstep. These boots are a game changer and protected his feet the entire ride.

I’m extremely cautious about protecting his front heels, as he had two separate heel bulb lacerations when he was younger, and his feet are hard but tender. After all the miles this week, his feet are in amazing shape, and he’s not one bit sore. We averaged about 10 miles a day.

These are a game changer for him, and I could feel his confidence boost having them on. Normally, he avoids rocky trails if he can, but by the third day, he was seeking them out as if he was testing his boots out!

I’ve been telling everyone I know how very happy I am with these and have been calling them his “sneakers”. This was my first ever time buying hoof boots for trail riding, and I spent a bit of time researching in endurance groups to find the right boot to try. I’m over the moon with the entire experience. The information on your site is incredible, very helpful, and well-explained. Again, the customer service was outstanding.

And I have to say, I absolutely LOVE the bling ✨
Does it feel a little extra? Yes.
Do I absolutely love it? YES!

I saw them and knew I had to have them and they are glorious. A quick wipe with a damp cloth after a dusty ride and they sparkle like a million diamonds again.

Please always carry the bling!” ❤️
