Hoofing it Out Before the Havoc: Getting Horses to Safety When Disaster Strikes

Kalyna Fedorowycz - Saved horse from 2025 California Fires
Kalyna Fedorowycz: Brave teen who saved horse from 2025 L.A. Fires

How far would you go to save your horse? And what if you were a 16-year-old girl, with fire closing in all around you and only one way out? In January, Kalyna Fedorowycz was faced with all these questions and more.

This young woman risked her own life so Sovereignty (a horse that was not even hers) was not left behind to die.

Sovereignty was safely booted with Cavallo Sport Boots on the hard pavement during their terrifying,  14-mile ride out of the canyon.

While Kalyna’s story is one of triumph, it also comes with a sobering reminder that not every animal makes it out of such disasters. This brings up the question of preparedness for all horse owners – what would YOU do if there was a major fire, flood or hurricane in your area? How would you get your horses to safety?

Emergency guide for horses - Cavallo Hoof Boots

Produced by Horse Council BC, ‘Fire! Flood! Earthquake! What Do I Do With My Horse?!’ is a must-read guide packed with practical, expert-backed advice to help you protect your horses when every second counts.

Clearly organized into easy-to-follow sections and checklists, it walks you through planning, evacuation prep, and how to keep your animals calm and safe in any emergency.

Hoof Saving Advantage: A Horse’s Emergency Lifeline

Keeping Cavallo Hoof Boots in your trailer or barn can help protect your horse’s health—and, in some cases, might even help save their life:

During Evacuation to Help Older, Injured Horses or Horses In Pain
Conditions such as arthritis, abscesses, laminitis, or navicular disease can make horses reluctant to keep moving or to travel long distances in an emergency; see an immediate difference in movement and comfort once boots are on.

✅ Able to Be Used over Metal Horseshoes or Bare Hooves
Which means they can be part of your emergency safety kit whether your horse is barefoot, partially shod, or fully shod.

✅ Protection from Heat-Scorched, Burned, or Slippery Ground
Cavallo TPU soles insulate hooves from hot pavement, cinders, or other hazardous surfaces encountered during evacuation.

✅ Burned or Injured Hooves – As a Poultice and Soaking Boot

Helpful for horses dealing with burned feet or hoof injuries—wrap or pack the hoof inside, and Cavallos will hold the poultice securely and keep the hoof clean. For soaking, simply cover the sole drainage holes with duct tape, and you have an instant soaking boot to help abscesses, bruises, or burns.

✅ Comfort in Challenging Situations
After evacuation, horses may be sore, sensitive, or walking over rougher, hotter ground than they’re used to—Cavallos add immediate cushion and relief.

✅ Trailering with Safety During Emergencies
Cavallos help protect hooves (and the horses around them) of panicked horses during trailering, while adding shock absorption and comfort for long hauls.

Maren, Cavallo Customer Service Expert, shares a close call that happened near the Cavallo offices:

Using Cavallo Hoof Boots for emergency evacuation

“A few years ago, we faced a fire in our area and had to prepare for a possible evacuation.

One of the first things I did was pack my Cavallo Hoof Boots in the trailer. I have a few horses who can be tender on gravel or hard surfaces, and since I wasn’t sure where we might end up, I wanted to be ready for anything.

Thankfully, the fire was contained without any complications, but having my Cavallo Boots on hand gave me peace of mind, knowing I could keep my horses as comfortable as possible.”

Help for Horses with Hoof Damage Due to Fire, Hot Ground and Terrain

In the Pacific Northwest in October 2021, fires tore through land and homes and displaced families -and their horses. Wildfires had burned 5.9 million acres in the United States, and another 10.33 million acres burned in Canada. Cavallo helped the horses displaced by these fires by donating hundreds of hoof boots and supplies to key rescue programs in British Columbia and Washington State. Cavallo also offered support as the rescuers learned how to use the boots as medical aids to support horses injured during the fires.
