Snow Happens. Ice Balls Are Optional 😉
Ice balling is one of those Winter problems that have been accepted for so long, it rarely gets questioned. Wet snow packs into a metal horseshoe, melts on contact, then refreezes into a hard, slippery mass with every step. The result is an unstable, high-heeled block of ice that compromises balance, increases the risk of slips and falls, and adds unnecessary strain to tendons and ligaments. It’s not a rare fluke of winter weather… It’s a predictable combination of cold metal, frozen moisture, and pressure.
Preventing ice balls usually means managing the shoe rather than the snow. Farriers may add anti-snowball, bubble, or rim pads.
Temporary fixes like petroleum jelly or cooking spray can help in a pinch, but they wear off quickly. Cavallo Hoof boots offer a practical alternative for both barefoot AND shod horses during turnout or riding, while improving traction. Curve Ball: Grinch Chooses to GIVE Christmas Instead of Stealing It!

One of the faces you’ll often see around town is Liberty, the beloved horse ridden by volunteer Rafael, who regularly appears in his western “Grinch” outfit alongside Boulder City Police at parades, events, and community gatherings.
Liberty has become a local favourite for her calm presence and the way she brings smiles wherever she goes. She also enjoys feeling secure on the asphalt with her Cavallo Boots – she switches between her Black and Green Trek! This Dr. Suess-themed duo also recently thrilled crowds at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas!
