Cavallo LEB “Long Ear Boots” User Manual

The Cavallo LEB Long Ear Boot is the only Hoof Boot designed specifically for donkeys. Whether you’re already familiar with hoof boots or exploring them for the first time, choosing the LEB means your donkey is stepping into comfort, protection, and freedom of movement. Donkeys aren’t just small, long-eared horses – their hooves are narrower, more upright, with strong frogs and large heel bulbs.

How to Measure and Size Your Donkey for the Cavallo LEB Long Ear Boot

Proper fit starts with accurate measurement. The Cavallo LEB Long Ear Boot measurement includes the heel bulbs, unlike other Cavallo styles. Here’s how to measure your donkey’s hooves for the best results.

1. Prepare the Hoof:
Always measure after a trim, as sizing already accounts for future growth. Clean the hoof so that all areas are clearly visible. Use a ruler or measuring tape with precise increments (e.g., 1/16 inch or millimetres) to ensure accuracy.

2. Measure the Hoof Length:
Place the “0” mark of your measuring tape at the toe and extend it straight to the back of the heel bulbs. Keep your ruler flat and straight for the most precise reading. Measure the length between the toe and the back of the heel bulbs.

3. Measure the Hoof Width:
Find the widest part of the hoof and place your measuring tool at one edge. Extend it straight across to the other side, keeping it level.

4. Take Photos for Accuracy (Optional):
For extra assurance, please take clear, well-lit photos of your donkey’s hooves with your measuring tool placed flat and straight at the zero mark. If you need help choosing the right size, our team is happy to provide a free, expert sizing recommendation.

Megan Hensley the donkey farrier

The Donkey Farrier AKA Megan Hensley Loves the Cavallo LEB!

“I’m very excited about the new LEBs – and had a wonderful time sharing them with a new mammoth donkey client.

At our first meeting, I learned that he had gone out to the backcountry a month prior and was a bit uncomfortable in some spots. The owner was concerned because they wanted to go back out this weekend.  They are new donkey owners and we’re not familiar with the different types of hoof protection. My eyes lit up, and I said I have just the thing!

Walter went the full 16 miles in the Trinity Alps in his new LEB boots. He had no real chance to break them in – only a few hours in his paddock the day before – but he still had no rubbing or discomfort from the boots. His owners kept wool socks on the whole time, and even left his boots on overnight. The boots never twisted or turned, and they stayed in place perfectly. The back squished down to accommodate his heel bulb height; you can’t even tell that he was ever wearing boots- no sign of rubbing or discomfort. I am absolutely thrilled!”

Cavallo mini horse hoof boots on Oscars stage

Best Dressed at the Oscars!

“What are you wearing?” has been a much-criticized question on the red carpet these days, but we found ourselves yelling it out when we watched the 2023 Oscars! Out trotted a lovely donkey at Jimmy Kimmel‘s side, wearing our Cavallo CLB (Cute Little Boots)!

This beautiful little donkey was actually a stand-in for Jenny and Rosie, who were the two Irish donkeys that starred in the film The Banshees of Inisherin. The film also stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson and received nine nominations at the award ceremony.

Comforting Laminitis & Thin Soles

“I researched hoof boots like crazy before choosing Cavallo, so glad I made the right choice! We love them!! Duke is a mule. He is 26 and suffers from hoof wall separation and Laminitis. He wears his with Gel Pads during turnout. Java a pinto – he is wearing his boots today for comfort during turnout because the ground is frozen, but he normally just wears his for trail riding (he has 3 pairs!) He has thin soles and is an in-betweener, size-wise. We absolutely LOVE YOUR BOOTS! Thank you!!”
