"As an Equine Podiatrist working in the UK, I frequently recommend Cavallo hoof boots for horses recovering from laminitis.
They are easy to put on/take off and take a thick foam pad for sole protection nicely. I'm known professionally as Vikki Fear DEP MEPA and am a member of The Equine Podiatry Association (UK). Here's a picture of my handsome boy in his green Treks, and some following photos of fitting pads to the boots."
"TREK boots have allowed him to stay barefoot without pain"
"My 23 yr old QH has chronic laminitis, a keratoma, and a clubbed front foot. He has always been shod on his front feet, but the TREK boots have allowed him to stay barefoot without pain. My guy deserves the very best! ???? We love him to pieces!"
Romeo got a trim and got to try on his new boots today.
"As a new owner (returned to horses after 30+ years), I just figured that a big, sturdy horse meant tough ol' big hooves.
I eventually learned that we can only expect their hooves to be conditioned to the substrate they live on. My horse is out 24/7 is a pasture and presents sensitive on gravel. As a pleasure rider who enjoys trails and obstacles, I had to choose between shoes and hoof boots to keep my partner comfortable. After MUCH research, I went with hoof boots. The customer service at Cavallo was exceptional. From back and forth about pictures and measurements for sizing to an easy exchange to get things just right. Romeo and I are looking forward to upcoming adventures with the added comfort of Cavallo Treks!"
“We travel a lot of miles, and the trailering is the hardest part on the horse. I was looking for a boot to help absorb some of the shock of the trailer ride.
I wanted a boot with a flat surface that wouldn’t change the angle of the foot. I wanted the foot to remain in the angles of the shoeing. For me, it’s more about shock absorption than it is for any traction. I also like having them on so when we stop to walk, I know they have protection from any rocks or rough surfaces. These are the easiest boots ever. They are quick to put on and last great. Mine have been on for hundreds of thousands of miles with no issues. When we arrive, I think my horses move better. Not as stoved up as they would be without boots.“
"Hello, thought I’d share a photo of Emeline on the top of the fells here in the Lake District, UK. Sporting her wonderful green Cavallo Treks! She’s never missed a beat with them ????"
"We went through it all, deep mud, deep creek, rocky creek bed, up and down rocky hills..."
"I think you can tell how much Coty and I love our green Trek boots! They are so easy to use for my older equestrian hands????and a big thank you to Kathy Deaton who gave me the chance to give them a try!!! We went through it all, deep mud, deep creek, rocky creek bed, up and down rocky hills and loping my QH to keep up with Rusty the TWH lol. TREKS LOVE THEM!
Rusty riding through rocks, mud and water today in NW Arkansas - we went through some crazy mud lol"
"Legit the best company to deal with. Best customer service you’re ever going to get.
Excellent product (used this brand years ago and didn’t know how to properly fit boots so I didn’t like them back then but WOW have things ever changed) I recommend the Cavallo TREK boots to all of my friends and anyone I know that shoes their horses and everyone is shocked at how incredible these boots are. We have gaited horses and they stay on!!!! If you have a horse with sensitive skin I highly recommend using the Pastern wraps under your boots so you don’t have to worry about rub marks. Some of my horses have to always have Pastern wraps on and some are great without “socks” size up a size for the wraps) also it’s nice to add the gel inserts if you ride on hard ground as they work great for shock absorption! if your horse has sensitive feet, do them a favour and order them some boots! Send foot measurements to the employee that works the Facebook page and they guarantee the fit!!! The trek hold up through any type of riding if the fit is right and they’re fastened properly (if you’re unsure if they look ok, ask Cavallo) I’ve tried the less expensive version of the boots and unfortunately have had a boot rip and Cavallo replaced them without making me feel bad for being a pain, they even covered the shipping. Honestly, where else can you find this kind of service?
I’ll keep recommending this product as I truly believe they’re the best, these boots have saves me THOUSANDS on what I would have spent on shoes. Nice to own your own rasp for minor hoof touch ups (ask your farrier for an old one) that way if your horse can’t get their foot into the boot you can touch up the small flare if need be."
"Django foundered twice in his early years. I was able to get him back with proper trimming and diet.
Django has a wild side and loves to run in the field and buck and twist then comes up lame the next day. This happened again this summer and he was having great difficulty getting around. I had Trek hoof boots for my other horse that didn't fit well but appeared to get him moving.
"I talked to a Cavallo rep who was able to recommend a proper size of Treks. Within a day Django was moving very nicely. I did a proper break-in period with the boots and now Django can wear them all the time and gets upset when I take them off to wash them. He really loves his boots, and has returned to going on hikes on the trails, running in the field and walking across the hard ground in the yard with no problem at all!
"I’m a Cavallo customer as long as I own a horse!"
"This is my Mustang, Moreno breaking in his new Cavallo Treks while mowing the yard! :-)
I just wanted to let you know that I ordered and received the Size 3 Slim Trek boots per your suggestion. Yesterday, I did the fit test on my gelding and they are a perfect fit! Popped right on and have no twist from side to side. He has room in the back of the boot which allows the space to add extra protection with Cavallo pastern wraps. The wraps will be wonderful during my Mounted Orienteering competitions where I often ride through streams, clearcut areas and heavy brush during a ride.
Thank you so much for the excellent and prompt customer care that you have provided to me over the last couple of weeks. I had no trouble re-selling the size 2 Trek boots as they only had about 10 miles on them and the gal that bought those was grateful to get an almost new pair at a discount! I’m a Cavallo customer as long as I own a horse!"
. “Tommy, my Paint, is 24 years young and loves going places to ride. We left him at home for a year before we found these boots. He is so glad to be out riding again!
Tommy has VERY tender soles. He wears metal horseshoes, but I put Treks (with pads to protect the Treks from the metal shoes), on him to ride trails. They have been great! They stay on, and he never gets poked or becomes lame now. Thank you for a great product!”
"We love this Park, close to home and they have several bridges to cross and tons of beautiful trails!
My horse, and the horse ahead of me were both wearing Cavallo Trek boots with Pastern Wraps. I am soooo happy with these boots!! First time this mare has gone barefoot in the 12 years I have owned her!! We crossed several bridges today with no problems. Love these boots!!"
Additional Protection for Yogi and his Thin Soles!
"I've owned the Trek Cavallo hoof boots for 2 years and they are the best.....I wear them over metal shoes as my horse is extremely thin soled and they have lasted 2 years of long tough trail riding. I've only just now had to buy a 2nd pair but the 1st pair can still be used as spares....so very impressed. My horse loves them and I can now ride him without him get stone bruising or nudging to the sides for softer ground.
I tell everyone I know about how awesome they are. I use them with the red gel cushion pads and the protection pads and your pastern wraps. My lil mini Sonic also wears the little glitter boots to make him comfortable when he has laminitis soreness.
My name is Dominica and this is my horse Flyer. We want to thank you for making such wonderful boots!. Flyer is currently recovering from a puncture on the bottom of his hoof. He’s very sore and it’s taken a while to recover enough to be cleared to go outside again. When I was told he needed a boot I immediately bought Cavallos. He wore it out for the first time the day before yesterday and it made all the difference in the world. It’s protecting his foot while it heals, he can run and move in it (well as much as a lame horse can run) and it stays in place and doesn’t twist or come off. I’m soo happy with this boot, it does the job perfectly.
Thank you for making amazing boots to help my best friend be able to go outside and live a normal life while he recovers. Today will be day three of full day turn out. Boot is on every day when I go check him (this is a miracle as this horse has at least 5 halters out in the field somewhere). It never slips or turns. Hes walking better everyday. Im so pleased. Your boots really did make all the difference. I hope this story can help others because I wouldn't recommend any other boot. Yours are the best!
"Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots may have very well saved her life"
"Flicka, our 34 yr old Morgan mare LOVES her Cavallo Trek boots.
She has PPID which set her up for several 'bouts of laminitis. She has continued to be footy for about 4 years until we fit her with (hoof boots) Cavallo's and now she is walking, running and wading into the pond again! She is obviously happy and pain free. Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots may have very well saved her life. They are so fast and easy to put on and take off. I don't know who loves them better, Flicka or me!!!"
Boots Provide Skipper with a Comfortable Retirment!
"Just wanted to say Thank You! The video is my horse Skipper “Saturnus” He’s a 23 yr old KWPN who retired after a career as an upper level show jumper with a chronic heel bulb and some arthritic changes.
We tried the usual route, steel shoes to eggbars and he’d improve for a bit but the transition period between shoeing he was sore and off. Legends injections and equiox. I worked with my vet and farrier and we finally came to the conclusion that his hooves just couldn’t support a shoe anymore. And viola - Cavallo’s entered the conversation.
Pulled his shoes - got good measurements ( thank you ) and got our first pair of ELB’s. Now 2 months later and we just upgraded to a pair of Trek’s we’re breaking in and I’m elated. I think I might be able to ride my perfect pony again ♥️
The thing that amazes me most is his disposition. Imagine if you walked around all day in an uncomfortable pair of shoes ~ He’s happy and forward and moving easily
And even if I never got the privilege of riding this gorgeous boy again ~ to see him comfortably trotting around his field is so worth it. So thank you ♥️ "
“Fame is happy in her Cavallo Simple Boots! We have a herd of 4, from a mini horse to a 16hh Quarter Horse. They all have at LEAST one pair of Cavallos! We have Simple, Treks, ELBs and CLBs. We also have almost every type of hoof boot pad Cavallo makes. Why do we exclusively use Cavallos?
They’re easy to get on. I don’t want to wrestle with a boot on a lame horse, or in the middle of a snowstorm. They come in a wide range of sizes. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to measure and get the right fit. Cavallos are easy to measure and I’ve never had issues getting the wrong size from my measurements.
Cavallos HOLD UP. Some of our crew are ROUGH on their gear. We’ve had many other hoof boot brands end up shredded and in the trash. Boots more expensive than Cavallos! After throwing away numerous pairs of boots that are $200+ a pair after owning them for a month, we switched to Cavallo and had zero issues.
Cavallo customer service is the absolute best. I sent them a message asking about using boots in snowy conditions and got a detailed and helpful answer within 24 hours. Often times it’s even sooner.”
"After being a long time Scoot user, my horses feet changed shape and they no longer fitted him. I saw the Cavallo Treks at a uk trade show and after talking it over with the company rep, decided they would be good to try with Smarty.
Well what can I say, I am absolutely blown away by how good they are. The fitting process was so easy, I used the guide in the little booklet and despite one foot being slightly smaller, they both measured up as a size 4. When the boots arrived they were so easy to put on and a shim/pad in the smaller hoof evened out the fit. I also ordered the pastern wraps for extra comfort. Our first ride was a 45km hack which I know sounds really irresponsible but it had been planned for some time and there were plenty of places I could shorten the loop if the boots were rubbing. He is also fine bootless so if I had needed to, I could have removed them.
I got off several times to check the boots and they didn't slip or budge once and he felt so sure footed. He did not have a single rub and the boots looked good as new!! One of the best features of the boots are how easy they are to put on and how secure they are. I always felt I was having to force his feet into his old boots and they would often fly off mid ride. The Treks feel like I couldn't pull them off if I tried when they are fastened which gives me such piece of mind for when I am competing in them next season!!"
“I was blown away how quickly my Mare Layla showed relief wearing her Size 2 Trek Boots...it took 40 seconds only.
She licked and chewed at about 15-20 Second wearing them, then started moving faster. Her story was; my Farrier had to trim aggressive to get rid of some bad splitting and fronts. My Farrier suggested to get some Boots to help for the transition till new growth. She was on Bute but now is pain free, the Boots got also the yellow insoles in it which I think made a huge difference, she holds her feet up patiently when I check them, she loves them. She's a healthy Mare but those Boots where a Miracle She's trotting & doing all again totally pain free...I'll be ordering a set of boots for my Gelding too as soon as I can afford them. Plus now my rides should be even better!”

Measure to Find Out
Regular or Slim Sole?
After a fresh trim measure hoof LENGTH from buttress line to toe as per the diagram.
Measure hoof WIDTH across the widest part of the hoof.
If these measurements are the same or very close, you need a REGULAR sole for this hoof.
The sole LENGTH on each size boot is the SAME on both REGULAR & SLIM soles.
The WIDTH on all SLIM soles is narrower than the length providing a better fit for a narrow hoof.

Want to order but don’t know your size?
No problem. You can still purchase your Cavallo Boots by selecting “Size to be Determined” under the size selection. After purchase, watch for a special email from Cavallo Customer Service with hoof measuring instructions and a link to upload your photos directly to us when you’re ready. After viewing your photos, we’ll make an expert size recommendation before shipping out your new boots!
Need help to find your size now? Send us your measuring photos Contact Us and we’ll send you an expert size recommendation. Here’s how to take measurement photos:
Step 1 — Prepare the Hoofs:
FOR ACCURATE SIZING, BE SURE TO TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS RIGHT AFTER A FRESH TRIM. (Future growth is already factored into each size range)
Brush and clean the hoof carefully so that the entire foot is clearly visible, and the buttress lines are obvious.
Make sure to use a measuring device with highly visible, contrasting numbers that will be easy to read and will show up well in photos.
DO: Use a ruler or tape measure with increments as small as 1/16 of an inch (or down to the millimeter for metric rulers). Measure precisely to 1/16 of an inch or millimeter, if possible.
Step 2 — Measure the Length
It is important to place the “0” of your measuring device securely against the tip of the toe. Run the measuring device straight down the center of the hoof toward the heel.
Locate your equine’s hard points of the heel (the buttresses) and measure to where these two emerge. Do not include the heal bulbs. Record the length measurement or submit a photo.
* The weight-bearing LENGTH most often indicates the size necessary. Take hoof WIDTH measurements as well, to confirm that you have chosen the correct sole shape for your horse, either Regular or Slim.
DON’T: Do not hold your measuring device at an angle. Do not leave any part of the measuring device extended over the edge of the toe
Step 3 — Measure the Width
Using the same measuring device, place the “0” at the edge of your horse’s hoof and run it straight and level across the widest point of the hoof. Make sure the measuring device is snug against the side of the hoof. Record the width measurement or submit a photo.
* If your horse’s hoof width measurement is greater than the hoof length measurement, choose your horse’s Cavallo boot size in the Regular sole shape, based on width (not length) measurement.
DON’T: Do not hold your measuring device at an angle.
Step 4 — Taking Measurement Photos
Please make sure you are in a well-lit area and that the entire cleaned hoof is visible in your photos. Position the camera squarely towards the hoof – not on an upwards or downwards angle. Make sure the measuring device is placed flat on the hoof. Always begin at the zero mark. Keep the device in a straight line both across and down. Please see the image below for example.
TIP: Proper photos are easier achieved with the help of another to hold the hoof.

Step 5 — Size Each Individual Hoof
Repeat the measuring process described above for all hooves you wish to size for Cavallo Hoof Boots.
TIP: Even on the same equine, not all hooves measure the same. It is always best to measure each individual hoof to obtain the most accurately sized boot for each foot.
Choosing your Sole Width
REGULAR SOLE: Length and width measurements are the same or fairly equal.
SLIM SOLE: For sizes 0-6, this sole is chosen when the sole width measurement is 6mm (1/4″) less than the length measurement (indicating a narrower hoof). If the width is more than two sizes narrower than the length, this sole may not be suitable.

How to Measure When Using Cavallo Boots Over Metal Shoes
Great results are obtained with Cavallos over metal, as the TPU (thermoplastic urethane) sole absorbs the shock, which causes vibration up the horse’s structure. Cavallos also prevent sole tenderness, heel bruising, pulling shoes off and injuries to the coronet band and other areas. Boots are also used for shod horses for hoof rehabilitation and to provide increased comfort and protection during riding, training, transport, and turnout.
To measure a shod horse, follow our regular measuring instructions (as above) but instead, measure the length and width of the horseshoe itself (rather than the bare hoof). If you are unsure of your measurements or would like a second opinion, please send us photos of the length and width of your horseshoes.
(If it is not possible for you to take or send us hoof measurement photos, please send us your careful measurements for both length and width of each hoof).
(If it is not possible for you to take or send us hoof measurement photos, please send us your careful measurements for both length and width of each hoof)
Each Hoof is a Unique Structure
Each equine’s foot is unique in conformation, shape, heel placement, hoof angles, etc. Our sizing recommendations are based on photographs. While they are generally correct, many variables can affect the fit of a Cavallo boot, which cannot be determined from a photo. Sizing cannot be confirmed until a boot is carefully fitted on the actual horse and tested for proper fit.
How to Test the Fit of your Cavallo Hoof Boots Before Using:
Only new UNUSED boots can be exchanged. To keep the boot clean, we suggest covering the hoof with thin plastic and checking fit on a non-scuff (not gravel), clean, dry surface.
Cavallo Hoof Boots are Easy to Fit!
Simply insert hoof into boot. Secure Velcro® closures, and then secure outside closure(s) on the boot.
Important Tips on Fitting
You should not have to force the boot on the horse’s hoof in any way. If you are having to force the boot on it is too small.
If the boot is rotating independently from the horse’s hoof it is too big. A wiggle is okay, because the hoof expands in weight-bearing and even further in movement.
Here you can see how the sole fits into the length of the boot and the heel bulbs fit into the padded heel area at the back of the boot:
Before Your First Ride
Like your own riding boots, it’s recommended that time is taken to gradually break in your Cavallo Boots. If your horse has sensitive skin, or if you are going on a long ride and are concerned about potential rubbing, Cavallo Pastern Wraps and/or Cavallo Comfort Sleeves are available. If your horse is fine-boned and there is excess space between the pastern and the boot collar, wraps can also prevent major debris from entering the boot.
Breaking In your New Boots
Remember that there is a break-in period like your own new boots would have when you first get them. On the first day, the boots shouldn’t be worn for more than 20 minutes. You wouldn’t put on brand-new boots and go walking for hours; treat your horse’s new boots (and feet!) as you would your own. You can speed up the break-in process by using a leather softener or riding through water.
Please see this video to find out more about how to break in your boots, and how they will shape to custom-fit YOUR horse:
Simple Fitting Tips
TOO SMALL: If you have difficulty putting the boot on, it may be too small. Ideally the boot “pops” nicely onto the hoof for a good fit. Please check your measurements against the chart above.
SOLE: The sole of the hoof should fit securely inside the boot sole. Ensure that the entire weight-bearing wall from front of toe to heel buttress sits within the boot outsole. It may be helpful to compare the outside raised tread area at the bottom of the boot to the weight-bearing length of the hoof sole (toe to buttress as per the diagram on the above measuring chart.
HOOF ON THE GROUND: Place your horse’s hoof firmly on the ground to fasten boot.
OUTER COVER: Ensure that the boot tongue is pushed firmly against the hoof. Draw the outer flaps firmly around the hoof, pressing the Velcro on the flaps against the Velcro on the tongue; keep taut and level.
TOO BIG: Pick the hoof up. If the boot twists or rotates excessively, it may be too big, or the outer cover may be loosely fastened. If the sole fits well but the upper portion of the boot is too large, consider the ELB or Trek styles as the outer flaps can be angled downward when fastening to adjust for an extra-snug fit on the upper. Some twisting is fine because the hoof is lifted, in its smallest position. When bearing the horse’s load it expands and may easily fill the boot.
CAVALLO PASTERN WRAPS and COMFORT SLEEVES may be used to assist in the breaking-in process or during injury to prevent chafing.
SIMPLE BOOTS ONLY: Once the boot is fitted, if the strap extends beyond the nylon keeper, then you can cut the strap to the preferred length, leaving a line of stitching to prevent unravelling. PLEASE NOTE: Boots cannot be exchanged if straps have been cut. Be sure boots are the correct size BEFORE cutting.

Potential Hydrolysis effect on Cavallo soles
Cavallo Hoof Boot soles are molded in industrial grade TPU (Thermoplastic Urethane). Under certain conditions, this compound may be vulnerable to a chemical reaction known as Hydrolysis. Hydrolysis is a bond breakdown which may occur at least 2 years after production. This happens only when boots are stored in unfavorable conditions and not being used. Hydrolysis may be avoided by ensuring good air ventilation and avoiding humidity over 70%. Keep the storage environment cool and dry with good air circulation. A combination of temperatures as high as 40 Degree Celsius with high moisture content, should be avoided.
Hoof boots that are frequently used in very wet conditions should be allowed to dry before storage and should not be stored in the original box or in areas of poor air circulation. Follow these instructions and your hoof boots will last free of Hydrolysis for many years.
