Where to Store Your Cavallo Hoof Boots

When storing your Cavallo Hoof Boots for long-term use, a few smart tools and habits can make a significant difference. For example, use a breathable gear bag or ventilated tack box—never airtight containers. Proper Hoof Boot storage will help prevent moisture buildup and allow for constant airflow, subsequently reducing the risk of hydrolysis.

Further, Many Cavallo customers have reported using wire boxes, milk crates, and shoe organizers for storing their boots.

Boots used in wet conditions should be fully dry before being put away. Always close all Velcro panels before storage to prevent hair, hay, and dirt from entering.

Finally, be cautious when buying used or 2nd hand hoof boots. You may not know how long they have been stored or under what conditions. Proper care ensures your boots last for many years without damage.

Special Consideration: What Is Hydrolysis?

When storing your Cavallo Hoof Boots, it is essential to understand hydrolysis, a chemical reaction that can affect your boots over time. Firstly, Hydrolysis is the breakdown of bonds within materials like TPU (thermoplastic urethane), which is used to make Cavallo soles.

However, This breakdown doesn’t happen overnight. It typically occurs after two or more years of storage in hot, humid, or poorly ventilated conditions. Temperatures exceeding 40°c, combined with humidity above 70%, significantly increase the risk.

Hydrolysis primarily affects boots that are stored and unused for extended periods, especially when they are kept in airtight containers or areas with limited airflow. Used regularly and stored correctly, your boots are highly unlikely to ever experience this issue.

To avoid hydrolysis, store your boots in a cool, dry location with good ventilation. Never seal them in airtight boxes or plastic bags. Use them regularly or rotate their use if you own multiple pairs.

If you’re buying boots from a third-party seller, ask about their storage history. Poor storage conditions and age can compromise durability, even if the boots are new.

Understanding hydrolysis gives you more control over caring for your gear. With the right habits, storing your Cavallo Hoof Boots safely ensures they stay strong, reliable, and trail-ready for years to come.

Fantastic Boots and Customer Service from Cavallo!

“I recently bought a pair of your simple hoof boots.  My horse has tender front feet. I had used shoes but after he pulled one two separate times I had them removed by my farrier – I found your boots at a horse tack store and was excited to try them.  After getting the size I needed I went home to try them.

They fit perfectly and my horse appreciated them as much as I did. After three uses and about 25 miles I was surprised to see that the tongue was falling apart! Not only that the other two flaps had thread starting to ravel.  I had read such good reviews so you can imagine my great disappointment. I noticed that in the material in the boot box it gave instructions to call Cavello’s.

There was an actual phone number and an actual person answered the phone.

I told her what happened with my boots and she asked me to send pictures. All this was done and she got back to me right away. I was told this is rare something called hydrolysis. She asked me to check inside each boot, for what looks like a dial and take a picture. This I did and sent it to her. Long and short of this is they were over ten years old!! The dial has a month and year on it. I did some investigating and found that the price of these boots I purchased had increased three times!

The company offered and has sent me a new pair of boots. They arrived yesterday. I can’t tell you how please I am with the way this was handle. How the people I was in contact with were kind and courteous. They listened and even though it was not there fault that that store owner never got rid of his old stock they stood by their promise. Thank you Cavallo. You have one more loyal satisfied customer!”

Thanks again for caring enough to make boots for them!”
