Western Kentucky University Research Recommends Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots for Hoof Protection, Traction, and Reduced Pressure:
Dr. Jennifer Gill and Gabriella Lynn of the Western Kentucky University Equine Science Department completed the first independent university study comparing hoof boots to traditional metal shoes. They chose their preferred boots for the study – the Cavallo Trek.
Results confirmed that Cavallo Hoof Boots benefit horses, provide comfort, protection and minimize potential hoof damage. The study focused on surface area, force, and pressure exerted on horses’ hooves while traveling on the hard surface of asphalt. The Scientists used FujiFilm imaging to determine the amount of pressure felt in the horse’s hooves, which allowed the scientists to see dynamic pressure through color mapping.
From Dr. Jennifer Gill: “We found that the Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots were significantly lower in pressure than the other two treatments,” Gill said. “And this is what we expected from our data. We would have expected that the Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots would have been lower, especially with hard terrain. This was good news for what we were expecting to see.”
“The Cavallo Boots protected the entire hoof itself, which we thought was very beneficial, especially over some other types of hoof protection, such as horseshoes,” Gill said. “We also found that the tread of the Cavallo Boots was thicker and would provide more space to contact with the ground than a metal horseshoe. The Trek Boots were significantly lower in pressure than the other two treatments. The contacting surface area with the Trek Boots was significantly higher than the other two treatments. There was more tread that was in contact with the ground than would be with the steel horseshoe and a steel horseshoe with Equi-Pak.” “Based on this result, we would say that horses would have better traction in the Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots and be better able to dissipate those forces and pressure because of the increases in surface area.”

My Story
My heart was broken when they put my horse down. Rocky was badly lame with ringbone, sidebone, splints and arthritis. He also had ulcers from the pain meds he was on. When I started asking, “Why would this happy, beautiful, 14-year-old horse have so many problems?”, it drove me crazy to be told that this is the way it is with horses, and I should get used to it.
I could not understand why a horse should be destined to endure lameness, pain, and dis-ease. I was shocked that people just accepted this as part and parcel of owning a horse. I was super frustrated. It wasn’t just my horse, but horses all around me had issues, too. Some problems were more obvious than others and easier to overlook. But horses had lameness, swellings, agitation, and tripping. It was just accepted as part of horse ownership. Why?
The painful death of my first horse was a pivotal point in my life. I became committed – in fact, obsessed- with finding answers. I went on to own several horses, who I couldn’t keep 100% sound 100% of the time. I would give them stall rest, or change the exercise program, or change the farrier, or the feed, or the supplements, but sure enough sooner or later – I’d go out to the barn and there it would be again – maybe not full-on lameness this time, but the peaked eye lid, the swishing tail, the inability to pick up the correct lead. The indications that things are not quite right. It was hard to know the problem exactly.
I’ll never forget THAT ONE day… Just before heading off to a competition, my horse was lame. AGAIN. I LOST IT. I just sat down in the paddock. As I stared at my horse – it hit me.
