Step-by-Step Boot Measurement Guide

STEP 1
Prepare the Hoofs
- Brush and clean the hoof carefully so that the entire foot is clearly visible.
- Make sure to use a measuring device with highly visible, contrasting numbers that will be easy to read and will show up well in photos.
For accurate sizing, take your measurements after a fresh trim.
Future growth is already factored into each size range.
STEP 2
Taking Measurement Photos
We highly recommend submitting photos to use our FREE sizing service. Your horse’s size will be determined by our skilled experts.
Please make sure you are in a well-lit area and that the entire cleaned hoof is visible in your photos. Make sure to measure right after a fresh trim. Position the camera squarely towards the hoof – not on an upwards or downwards angle. Make sure the measuring device is placed flat on the hoof. Please see Steps 3 and 4 for examples
TIP: Proper photos are more easily achieved with the help of a second person to hold the hoof and tape measure.

STEP 3
Measure the Length
It is important to place the “0” of your measuring device securely against the tip of the toe. Run the measuring device straight down the center of the hoof toward the heel. Locate your equine’s hard points of the heel (the buttresses) and measure to where these two emerge. Do not include the heel bulbs. Record the length measurement or submit a photo.
* For a donkey hoof, measure the FULL length of hoof, including the bulbs.
* The weight-bearing LENGTH most often indicates the size necessary.
DON’T: Do not hold your measuring device at an angle. Do not leave any part of the measuring device extended over the edge of the toe. Don’t measure by tracing the hoof – your boot sizing will NOT be accurate.

STEP 4
Measure the Width
Place the “0” of your measuring device at the edge of your horse’s hoof and run it straight and level across the widest part. Make sure the measuring device is snug against the hoof. Record the width measurement or take a photo.
* If your horse’s hoof width measurement is the same as the length, choose the Regular sole shape. When the sole width measurement is less than the length (indicating a narrower hoof), select a Slim Sole. If the width is two or more sizes narrower than the length, please consult Customer Service.

STEP 5
Send in Your Photos
You can use this form to upload photos so that one of our experts can help you choose the perfect hoof boot size. Please click the button to upload your hoof measurement photos directly to us for an expert sizing recommendation:

How to Test the Fit of Your Cavallo Hoof Boots
Cavallo Hoof Boots are Easy to Fit!
Simply insert the hoof into the boot. Secure Velcro® closures, and then secure outside closure(s) on the boot.
Important Tips on Fitting
- You should not have to force the boot on the horse’s hoof in any way. If you have to force the boot on, it is too small.
- If the boot is rotating independently from the horse’s hoof, it is too big. A wiggle is okay because the hoof expands in weight bearing and even further in movement.
Only new, UNUSED boots can be exchanged. To keep the boot clean, we suggest covering the hoof with thin plastic and checking the fit on a non-scuff (not gravel), clean, dry surface.

How Should Your Horse’s Hoof Fit Into a Cavallo Boot?
Here you can see how the hoof sole fits into the length of the boot, and the heel bulbs fit into the padded heel area at the back of the boot.
Boot Break-In Guide
Breaking In your New Boots
Horse owners should allow their horses to ‘break in’ their boots gradually, starting with 15 – 20 minutes per day and increasing from there, while monitoring for comfort. Using Cavallos in water or applying a leather conditioner to “work” the leather at the heel bulb will hasten the softening progress. Cavallo Comfort Sleeves or Pastern Wraps can be used to help prevent any chaffing during the break-in period, and are especially helpful for horses using Cavallo Boots for therapy or rehabilitation when there isn’t time for a gradual break-in.
This helpful video by Carole shows how Cavallos adapt to your horse’s individual hoof and bulb area during the break-in period, offering your horse a custom fit.

Fitting a Finer-Boned Horse
The Trek and ELB (Entry Level Boots) are the best choices for finer-boned horses.
Both styles have a unique front-closure system that allows for an highly customized fit on the upper portion of the boot – creating a very secure fit. Wrap the Velcro closures from back to front drawing to the front on a downward angle to create a “V” shape in the center to tighten the fit.
Fastening your Cavallos snugly creates a natural cone shape—just like your horse’s hoof—so when combined with the industrial-strength Velcro® closures and correct boot sizing, you get a secure fit that won’t come off in any terrain!

Using Cavallo Boots Over Metal Horseshoes
Great results are obtained with Cavallos over metal, as the TPU (thermoplastic urethane) sole absorbs the shock, which causes vibration up the horse’s structure. Cavallos also prevent sole tenderness, heel and sole bruising, chipping, pulling shoes off and injuries to the coronet band and other areas.
Cavallos are also used for shod horses during hoof rehabilitation and to provide increased comfort and protection during riding, training, transport, and turnout. Cavallo High Tenacity Protection Pads should be used in Cavallo Boots when a horse is wearing metal horseshoes to protect the boot’s sole
Measuring is easy—simply measure the length and width of the metal horseshoe itself.
Easy Fitting Tips
Easy Fitting Tips
-
Too Small
If the boot is difficult to put on, it may be too small. A proper fit should allow the boot to “pop” neatly onto the hoof. Always double-check your measurements against the chart above.
-
Sole Fit
The hoof sole should sit fully inside the boot sole. Make sure the entire weight-bearing wall—from the toe to the heel buttress—rests securely within the boot.
-
Hoof on the Ground
When fastening, place your horse’s hoof firmly on the ground. Push the tongue of the boot snugly against the hoof, then pull the outer flaps firmly from back to front. Press the Velcro flaps onto the tongue, keeping tension even and aligning both top and bottom. This secures the boot. Outside straps or buckles add extra stability.
-
Too Big
Lift the hoof. If the boot twists or rotates too easily, it may be too large, or the outer cover may not be tightened enough. A little wiggle room is fine. The hoof is smallest when non-weight-bearing but expands under load and often fills the boot comfortably.
-
Cavall Hoof Boot Pads
Cavallo Hoof Boot Pads can help snug up your boot fit if needed—very handy if your boots are a bit roomier right after after a trim.
-
Cavallo Pastern Wraps and Comfort Sleeves
May be used to assist in the breaking-in process or during injury to prevent chafing.
-
Simple Boots Only:
Once a Simple Hoof Boot is fitted, if the strap extends beyond the nylon keeper, then you can cut the strap to the preferred length, leaving a line of stitching to prevent unravelling.

When you first introduce your Cavallo Hoof Boots, it’s essential to allow your horse time to break them in gradually. Like any new gear, it’s best to take a gradual approach to ensure your horse’s comfort and avoid any rubbing or soreness. Start by having your horse wear the boots for about 15-20 minutes per day. Further increase the time each session over several days or even weeks, depending on your horse’s sensitivity and the boot’s fit. This slow introduction allows the boots to soften and mould to the natural shape of your horse’s hooves. To speed up the break-in process, you can apply leather conditioner around the padded leather heel bulb area or dampen the boots with water to soften them more quickly.
The Cavallo Hoof Boot break-in period ensures your horse enjoys maximum comfort and protection. With soft, padded leather around the heel bulbs and foam cushioning that moulds to the shape of your horse’s hooves, the boots provide exceptional support and reduce pressure! As you gradually break in the boots, they adapt to your horse’s unique hoof shape, offering a custom fit that prevents rubbing and discomfort.

Cavallo Hoofcare savings are substantial for horse owners, as hoof care is one of the most significant ongoing expenses. By switching to a barefoot lifestyle with Cavallo Hoof Boots, you can drastically cut costs while still providing your horse with the comfort and protection they need.
Traditional Shoeing Costs – Horses that wear metal shoes typically require shoeing every six weeks to maintain proper hoof health and prevent discomfort or lameness. Here’s what that looks like financially:
$200 per shoeing session
8 shoeing sessions per year (every 6 weeks) → $1,600 per year
Total yearly cost: $1,600 USD
Barefoot & Booted Costs – By transitioning to a barefoot lifestyle and using Cavallo Hoof Boots when needed, you can dramatically cut down on your annual hoof care expenses while keeping your horse comfortable and protected. Here’s the cost breakdown:
$50 per barefoot trim
8 trims per year (every 6 weeks) → $400 per year
Cavallo Trek Boots (designed to last approximately two years with regular use) → $209.90 per pair; $104.95 per year
Total yearly cost: $504.95 USD
The Savings Add Up – By choosing to go barefoot and booted, you save $1,095 per horse every year. Over the course of a horse’s lifetime, these savings can add up to tens of thousands of dollars!
Not only is this approach more affordable, but it also supports natural hoof function, improved circulation, and long-term soundness.

Storing your Cavallo Hoof Boots properly helps extend their life and maintain their performance. Whether you use them daily or just occasionally, proper storage prevents wear, damage, and odour.
When storing your Cavallo Hoof Boots use a breathable gear bag or ventilated tack box – never airtight containers. Proper Hoof Boot storage will help prevent moisture buildup and allow for constant airflow, subsequently reducing the risk of hydrolysis. Many Cavallo customers have reported using wire boxes, milk crates, and shoe organizers to store their boots. Boots used in wet conditions should be fully dry before being put away. Always close all Velcro panels before storage to prevent hair, hay, and dirt from entering.
Finally, be cautious when buying used or 2nd hand hoof boots. You may not know how long they have been stored or under what conditions. Proper care ensures your boots last for many years without damage.

Transitioning to barefoot with Cavallo Hoof Boots is one of the best decisions you can make for your horse’s health! Moving away from metal shoes allows your horse’s hooves to function as nature intended – flexible, shock-absorbing, and whole.
When metal shoes are removed, circulation and sensation return to areas that were previously restricted. During this period, hoof walls may chip, frogs may shed, and your horse might appear uneven on gravel or pavement. This is normal – don’t panic! As your horse’s hooves begin to strengthen and self-regulate, Cavallo boots help bridge the gap between shod and barefoot life.

You can swap the boots as needed without losing performance, comfort, or protection. Because Cavallo boots are interchangeable, you can rotate them between feet to reduce uneven wear. This helps extend the life of your gear. Still, some riders prefer to assign one boot to the left hoof and one to the right. Why? It helps you track wear patterns over time.
