Ground-Breaking Research by Barefoot Horse Researcher, Sarah Albanozzo
Sarah Albanozzo is a Cavallo Hoof Boot lover and a passionate believer in barefoot and booted lifestyle for optimal horse health.
She is a Research Project Manager at the University of Malta and a part-time student at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Sarah is also an independent researcher on equine hoof morphology and has been a devout equestrian for 42 years.
Sarah has shown us that the hooves of barefoot-kept horses are capable of walking over hard ground due to their physiology. Since the results showed accelerated sole growth and since there is no information documented in equine veterinary literature, she compared the horse’s foot to the human foot, focusing on a particular mechanoreceptor that is responsible for promoting sole growth. The success of this study, however, was also due to frequent non-invasive trimming cycles (keeping hoof walls level with the sole and toes short) and the fact that the animals were on a 100% forage-based diet with 24/7 turnout, roaming over varied terrain. When comparing locomotion in barefoot and booted horses versus shod horses, the difference is very evident, as noted in the published study below.
The peer-reviewed and published paper, Hoof Capability of Barefoot-Kept Horses and Ponies Walking over Artificial Environments: An Anatomical and Radiological Study, is a joint collaboration with Prof. Robert M Bowker (VMD PhD), Dr Louis Borg (DVM), and Prof. Liberato Camilleri. We’re so proud to share Sarah’s important study with YOU, our Cavallo community.

A Message to You From Sarah:
“My intention is not only to present you with the results of this unusual study but also to show you WHY there was accelerated sole growth on such hard surfaces. Once you gain insight into the internal hoof anatomy, including the location and function of certain sensory structures, you will understand how this is very much connected to locomotion.
I would like to thank Prof Dr. Robert Bowker, Dr. Tomas Teskey and Yvonne Welz (The Horse’s Hoof), for allowing me to use their images in order to explain what happened during the study. Thanks also to Silvio Schembri, for allowing me to document the gait of his racehorses. A HUGE thank you goes to the SEA-EU team for granting the opportunity to present our results.”

Congratulations to Carole

Ever Seen a Hoof with an an Aneurysmal Cyst? Check out the X-Ray:
He has something quite unusual in his right front pedal bone: an aneurysmal cyst (a blood-filled void), so we’re now barefoot. He gets turned out with boots on the fronts, and he gets ridden with boots all around. Put the boots on, and he immediately lands heel first.
Thank heavens for Cavallo Sport Boots and a great trimmer, 4 Hooves Hoof Care, LLC!”
